John McDonnell's 'Trade Union Rights and Freedoms Bill'
The Trade Union Rights and Freedoms Bill is listed in parliament on the 19th October 2007. To mark this important event the United Campaign to Repeal the Anti-Trade Union Laws has organised a National Rally in Parliament on the 18th October.
If enacted the Bill would significantly strengthen trade union rights, including:
o Better protection for striking workers
o Simpler and fairer industrial action balloting and notice procedures
o Reform of the use of injunctions by employers
o Allowing solidarity action in certain circumstances
o Prevention of the use of replacement labour during strikes
o Trade- union rights for prison officers.
The United Campaign is supported by 24 National Trade Unions and has played a key role in the Campaign for a Trade Union Freedom Bill. Members of Parliament have been invited to the rally and the United Campaign is looking for the biggest possible turnout from the Labour Movement.
What the Deputy Leadership Candidates said about the Bill:
"Do you support the right for workers to take solidarity action in certain circumstances as set out in the Trade Union Freedom Bill?"
Harman: "Gate Gourmet was a scandal...yet BA workers broke the law when they took solidarity action. That is wrong. As the Trade Union Freedom Bill proposes, where there is a clear link between two groups of workers of that kind, it should not be against the law for husband to support wife."
Cruddas: "Yes. The reality is that the UK framework of employment rights is not suitable for the modern economy where there is so much outsourcing and contracting. Strike action is a weapon of last resort but a fundamental right."
Hain: "It is of course right that where employment rights are breached, trade unions have the power to take collective action against unscrupulous employers, discriminatory employers. In examples such as the case of Gate Gourmet...unions must have autonomy to act on behalf of workers to protect their rights."
